New on the HD950 is Clear Motion Drive. Its a frame rate accelerator, associated with an HQV Reon-VX picture processor from Silicon Optix.
To test the effectiveness of CMD, I watched a lengthy sequence from Armageddon, involving the destruction of a Russian satellite in orbit. Its a tough clip for any projector at the best of times: theres copious detail, fast-moving camera pans, oceans of deep space and intense explosive peaks. I was really surprised by what the JVC model achieved. Naturally, blacks looked great, without compromising the shadowed detail inside the space craft, theres no smearing of the image that I could detect, and detail pinged. I had to pinch myself that this was actually SD upscaled.
Those with large NTSC DVD collections will appreciate the projectors Inverse Telecine mode. This grabs encoded video from NTSC discs at 24fps and displays it at 48fps. The result is a deliciously smooth output with no 2-3 pulldown judder.
Interestingly, the picture was viewed using the one-button THX preset. This automatically optimizes the projectors image to THX spec, without need for tiresome calibration. Although the model does have ISF modes for those that want to pay someone to come and fiddle/fine-tune the image, the out -of-the-box THX mode is so good, I wonder why theyd bother.
The projector also has a screen optimizer which I also think is new; you simply tell the PJ if you have a white or grey screen and it adjusts itself automatically.
In hi-def mode the DLA-HD950 astounds. The Batpod chase from The Dark Knight is another perfect showcase for D-ILA. Shot at night, but with massive peaks and fast-moving action, it simply looked sensational. The razor-sharp imagery was superheroic. By way of contrast, the opening hijack from Fast and Furious unspools in bright daylight, but again the depth and solidity of the 950s imagery is breathtaking. At no point could I see a pixel grid. The image was smooth and cinematic.
